Somerset tourism organizations receive nearly $200,000 in grants

 SOMERSET – Brainstorming with fellow tourism entrepreneurs, Judy Pletcher, who operates Rockwood Mill Shoppes and Opera House, came up with a wild-sounding idea for a performance: a garlic-themed cabaret.

Comedy on marquee at Mountain Playhouse

The 77th season of the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown will take audience members on a comedic journey.

The playhouse will produce six shows that will bring laughs, upbeat music and even mystery to the stage.

"This season, all the shows have an element of comedy to them that will make you laugh," said Laura Argenbright, the playhouse's executive director.

Argenbright Promoted at Mountain Playhouse

Laura Argenbright, who served as Mountain Playhouse's director of marketing and development, has been promoted to executive director.

"For the past three years, Laura has been instrumental in growing our audience, building relationships with funders and increasing awareness about the playhouse, all of which are vital to sustaining the playhouse for the region," said the Rev. Joseph Beer, board of directors chairman. "The board of directors believes that by creating this leadership role, Laura will be in an even more effective position to positively direct the progress of the theater."

Argenbright said that her new role is full of opportunities.

Jennerstown's Mountain Playhouse marks 75th season

The Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown marked its 75th season Tuesday with a ceremony to commemorate its first live production at the historic landmark on June 24, 1939.

"The Mountain Playhouse's diamond anniversary is a true accomplishment in the theater world," said Teresa Stoughton Marafino, the theater's producer. "It is also a commitment to the arts made by the founding Stoughton family and the Mountain Playhouse board of directors."
